South Pittsburgh Hockey Club Announces Matt Ward as 8U ADM Coordinator
The South Pittsburgh Hockey Club (SPHC) is proud to announce the hiring of Matt Ward as the organization’s American Development Model (ADM) Coordinator for its 8U (Mite) program.
The ADM is USA Hockey’s nationwide player development framework, designed to provide age-appropriate training and competition while prioritizing skill development, fun, and long-term growth. As ADM Coordinator, Ward will play a key role in ensuring SPHC continues to deliver a best-in-class experience for its youngest players.
In this role, Ward will:
- Serve as the primary liaison to USA Hockey’s ADM program
- Support and develop coaches through education, resources, and on-ice feedback
- Help design and implement station-based practices focused on skating, puck skills, and hockey IQ
- Provide guidance on player development pathways and team structure
- Lead parent education efforts to better communicate the ADM philosophy
- Assist with evaluations, team formation, and long-term program planning
- SPHC’s 8U program emphasizes a station-based practice model, skill progression, and a positive environment where players can grow both on and off the ice. From summer skills sessions through the regular season, the program is designed to build strong fundamentals while fostering a love of the game.
Ward brings an extensive hockey background to the role. A Greensburg, Pennsylvania native, he began playing hockey at age five and continued through college. He served as captain at Greensburg Central Catholic High School and went on to play at Saint Vincent, where he still holds the program’s all-time scoring record. He later continued his career at California University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the 2008 National Championship team.
Today, Ward is an active youth coach within the South Pittsburgh Rebellion organization, working with athletes across multiple sports including hockey, soccer, and flag football. He is known for his commitment to player development, teamwork, and creating a positive, engaging environment for young athletes.
Ward’s experience as both a high-level player and a dedicated youth coach makes him a strong fit for this role. His passion for player development and commitment to the ADM philosophy are expected to have a significant impact on the continued growth and success of SPHC’s 8U program.
Ward resides in Peters Township with his wife and their three children and is deeply committed to strengthening the local hockey community.
