19U Girls - Steve Anthos
Head Coach Steve Anthos has been coaching at SPHC since 2006. He has coached every level of amateur hockey, from mites through midget. Mr. Anthos served on the Board of Directors at South Pittsburgh and South Fayette hockey and has been the head coach of the SAHA 19U Girls' team for 7 seasons. The SAHA 19U Girls won both the regular season and playoff PAHL banners in 2018-19, the regular season banner in 2019-20 and the playoff banner in 2020-21.
16U AA - Joe Thomas
Head Coach Joe Thomas started his coaching career in the PIHL with the Bishop Canevin Crusaders at the middle school (assistant and head coach) and varsity (assistant coach) levels. Coach Thomas is a USA Hockey level 4 certified coach and has seven seasons of coaching experience between the PIHL and PAHL, including 3 seasons of head coaching experience in the PAHL at the 14U and 16U levels. Last season, Coach Thomas was the head coach of the Southpointe 14UAA major team. Coach Thomas’ playing experience includes the Arctic Foxes and Bishop Canevin Varsity.
Assistant Coach DJ Zeh’s coaching experience includes 7 seasons combined with SHAHA 14U A Major assistant coach, Rink Rats 16U A Major assistant coach, Bishop Canevin middle school assistant coach, and Bishop Canevin varsity assistant coach. Last season, Coach Zeh was an assistant coach for the Southpointe 14U AA Major team. Coach Zeh’s playing experience includes the Southpointe Rink Rats, Pittsburgh Predators AA, Bishop Canevin varsity, and the University of Pittsburgh ACHA D1.
Assistant Coach Justin Kostosky has two years of coaching experience at 10U AA, 12U A, and most recently was an assistant coach for the Southpointe 14U AA Major team. Coach Kostosky grew up playing hockey for SHAHA and then for Little Caesars AAA before returning to SHAHA to finish out his youth hockey career. In addition to being an assistant coach for the 16U AA team, Coach Kostosky is also the head coach for the Rebellion 08BY team.
Assistant Coach Jacob Betzner grew up in the Pittsburgh area playing as a defenseman mostly at the AA and AAA levels and with the Bishop Canevin varsity team before two seasons with the Ohio University club team. After college, Coach Betzner helped coach a Southpointe Rink Rats 16U team and eventually moved on to coach the 18U team for several seasons, winning a 18U Playoff Championship in 2018. In 2019, Coach Betzner transitioned to the PIHL with the Peters Township Middle School hockey team, winning a Tier I championship in 2021. Coach Betzner focuses on individual skill development to get the most out of every players’ skill set to ultimately help the team succeed.
16U - Clay Shell
Clay Shell has a long resume of coaching hockey for 16 years and is a USA Hockey Level 5 - Master Coach with several accolades. The past 5 years, he has served as the Montour Varsity High School Head Coach where his teams have earned several awards including 2017 PIHL Penguins Cup Semi Finalist, 2019 PIHL Penguins Cup Champions, 2020 PIHL Penguins Cup Quarter Finalist, and recently 2021 PIHL Penguins Cup Semi Finalist. Before coaching, Clay played amateur for MLHA squirt through Midget also Freshman, JV and Varsity for Mt. Lebanon High School (1986 Graduate).
Clay started here at South Pittsburgh with the Southpointe Rink Rats as their Squirt A Head Coach in 2003 and has coached youth players from every level from Mites through Varsity High School and 18U in many organizations from PAHL and PIHL. Some highlights include serving on the Board of Directors at Southpointe as Director of Coaching and Player Development (2006-2009). Clay was also the head coach for Pittsburgh Predators Bantam AA (PAHL Regular Season Champion, PAHL Playoff Champion, Mid Am Champion, LCAHL Regular Season Champion, LCAHL Playoff Champion, and USA Hockey Nationals Participant). Then from 2013-2016, he also served as the Assistnat Coach for the Peters Township High School where they won the PIHL Penguins Cup and also were Pennsylvania State Champions.
14U Girls - Rob Hammel
Rob Hammel is entering his 4th year of coaching at South Pittsburgh, third as a head coach. Coach Hammel grew up playing youth hockey in Pittsburgh and moved to Connecticut to play high school. In the summers, he played for Team Mid-Am at USA Hockey's Select 15, 16 & 17 Festivals, tryout for USNTDP. After high school, Coach Hammel signed a tender with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and played Tier 1 Junior ‘A’ in 2000-2001. Coach Hammel then played 4 years of NCAA Div. I for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats from 2002 – 2005, winning 1 conference title and playing in the 2002 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey tournament.
14U Bantam AA - Tanner Orr
Coach Orr has been playing competitive hockey for 14 years. He started his youth travel hockey career at SHAHA on a 12U B major team and ended by playing at SHAHA on an 18U AA team. He then moved from SHAHA to the Esmark Stars at the AAA level as a Midget major. He played his high school career on the South Park Varsity team during his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. During his junior year he was named Captain. This year he is ending his college career on the Robert Morris University D1 Club. He started playing at RMU as a true freshman and was named Captain for the RMU D1 Club team for two years. In addition to his playing career, Coach Orr has been coaching for a number of years. He has been a Skills Coach for National Elite for four years, an Assistant Coach for the National Elite Spring Program for four years (a total of eight teams) and a Head Coach for the National Elite Spring Program for three years (a total of five teams). He has also been a Next Step Skills Coach for two years. Finally, over this past 2 years, he has been a coach for the Tyler Kennedy Training program and an Assistant Coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Black ’07 team.
14U Bantam 2008 - Justin Kostosky
Head Coach Justin Kostosky has 2 years of coaching experience at 10U AA and 12u A including serving as 10u-14u AAA Skills Coach. This will be his third season coaching with the South Pittsburgh 14U AA major team. Justin grew up playing hockey for SHAHA, and then moved to Michigan to play for Little Caesars AAA. He then returned to SHAHA after moving back to Pittsburgh to finish his youth hockey career. In addition to being head coach for the 2008 team this year, Justin is going to also serve as a 16U AA assistant coach for the 2006 team.
12U Pee Wee 2010 - Sean Coyle
Sean Coyle has been named as the head coach of the 2021-22 South Pittsburgh 2010 team after a successful 2020-2021 campaign where the team captured the PAHL Squirt AA Championship.
This will be Sean’s 10th year coaching at South Pittsburgh. He is a USA Hockey level 4 certified coach. His coaching resume includes Mites to Bantam AA. He has assisted and developed many players to both the AA and the Tier 1 AAA level.
Sean played amateur hockey in the Pittsburgh area, including playing for the perennial champion Bishop Canevin Crusaders of the PIHL. He is currently a South Pittsburgh board member and serves as VP/Director of coaching. Sean also served as South Pittsburgh’s Mite Coordinator for 2 seasons. He is a licensed physical therapist and brings his knowledge of kinesiology and sports medicine to the organization for off ice programs.
12U Pee Wee – Rob Nelson
Coach Rob is entering his 17th season as a youth hockey coach in western Pennsyvlania and his 15th with the South Pittsburgh organization. He has served as the Registrar and SafeSport Coordinator for the past five seasons and also holds a position on the South Fayette Hockey Club board of directors. His coaching philosophy prioritizes fun, team first and development. His teams operate under the mantras that “everyone can find a role” and “attitude and effort require zero talent”.
12U Pee Wee - Tristan Wenzig
Head Coach Tristan Wenzig has a long hockey history of both playing and coaching hockey. Tristan played amateur hockey in the Pittsburgh area and was an ACHA Division 1 player. He is a proud member of the Pittsburgh Warthogs Veteran's hockey team.
Tristan is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach and will be moving into his 10th year of coaching since transitioning his journey from player to coach. Within the past 10 years, Tristan has coaching experience in youth hockey from Mites to Juniors. Click here for Full Bio
10U Squirt AA - Tim Creahan
Tim Creahan is entering his 4th year of coaching with the South Pittsburgh Rebellion. This is his second as a head coach. The first two years he served as an assistant coach at the Mite level for Southpointe. In addition, Tim is an active coach within the South Fayette Township hockey program, serving as an assistant coach for both the Lions mite and squirt teams. Coach Creahan has been a head coach for a number of soccer teams in the South Fayette Soccer Association, and been an assistant coach on various baseball teams within the SFBSA teams for both his son and daughter.
Tim grew up in Buffalo, NY and played amateur hockey for the Amherst Knights. Tim still enjoys playing hockey now, and his passion is coaching his kids!
10U Squirt - Klete Kutrovac
Klete Kutrovac is entering his 5th season coaching at South Pittsburgh with this being his 3rd season as a head coach; he also holds a Level 4 USA Hockey coach certification. Coach Kutrovac grew up in nearby Wheeling, WV and he played hockey through high school for the Wheeling Area Hockey Association; he continues to play adult league as time permits. Coach Kutrovac focuses on teaching the kids through organized and challenging practices along with an emphasis on repetition learning. Coach Kutrovac most enjoys seeing the kids have fun, develop in youth hockey, and learn valuable life lessons while playing the game. Coach Kutrovac also coaches youth baseball for Canon-Mac and in his free time enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and friends.
10U Squirt - Anthony Santaguida
This coming season will be Anthony's third with the South Pittsburgh Rebellion / Rink Rats. The past two years he coached at the mite level, most recently with one of the mite white teams. Anthony also began coaching grasshopper soccer in Peter's Township starting with the fall 2020 season and continuing into spring 2021. He loves being on the ice and helping young athletes to learn the sport while having fun! He grew up in Pittsburgh playing hockey at Mount Lebanon.
10U Squirt – Brad Smith
Brad Smith is entering his second season coaching with the South Pittsburgh Rebellion. Coach Brad grew up playing ice hockey and continues to play adult league hockey. Brad has a passion for the sport and believes that hockey builds character, self-confidence, and tenacity. Coach Brad focuses on player development and bringing teams together. Off the ice, Brad is a Regional Sales Manager for an international medical device company where he attributes much of his professional success to lessons learned from hockey.
Mite Coordinator - Matt Harmon
Matt Harmon has been named as Mite Coordinator for the 2021-22 season. This upcoming season will mark the 16th team that Matt has coached as either a Head Coach or Assistant Coach with multiple youth programs. Most recently he served as an Assistant Coach for the 2020-2021 PAHL Champion 2010 Birth Year Squirt AA Team supporting Sean Coyle. Matt also served as the head coach for Southpointe's 8U White Mites, and both the Peters Township Jr Indians Mite & Peewee teams in 2020-2021. Matt has overseen or assisted in the development of players making significant year to year progress, from Blue to Red Mite, and from Red Mite to Squirt 1 with multiple players. Matt has had the benefit of working with and having great relationships with some of the area's premier High School, Collegiate, and Tier 1 Coaches, and enters the 2021-2022 Season as a USA Hockey registered Level 4 Coach.
Matt grew up playing amateur hockey in Pittsburgh, where he then went on to play D1 hockey at Duquesne University. In addition to his coaching qualifications, Matt is a USA Hockey Level 4 Ice Hockey Official and officiates ice hockey in the NCAA. Matt was also honored to be selected to officiate the 2019-2020 USA Hockey National Championships.
